Foodies Delight Tour (Modena, Italy)

modenaIf you’re planning a trip to Modena, this a MUST-DO. Completely serendipitous, my friend and hottie travel writer Kevin Raub and I were going to be in Italy for exactly one day at the same time. Having not seen Kevin since my wedding day about a decade ago, I had to take this opportunity to see him and his lovely wife Andriana. I literally went straight from San Francisco, traveled by air for 14 hours, arrived in Florence and then took a 2 hour car ride after being awake for almost 24 hours to meet those two in Modena but Kevin promised me GOOD FOOD and boy, did he deliver.  After a fabulous gluten-free dinner at Trattoria Aldina, we spent the next morning on the Foodies Delight Food Tour.

This tour is FANTASTIC and can be done gluten free.

First, you tour a parmiggiano reggiano factory and learn how the good stuff is made.

Then you head to an Acetaia (balsamic vinegar producer) to learn about authentic balsamic vinegar and to taste them at different ages. They also make the most spectacular digestivo from walnuts. If you’re there, grab a bottle.

At the end of the tour, you go to the Museum of Salumi or MUSA. It’s phenomenal and super interesting. After a tour that gets your appetite going, you enjoy a delicious tasting of different salamis, along with some wine. In the front, they have a deli to die for – I ended up with ricotta cheese cakes, straciatella cheese, two packages of salumis and a bottle of wine. All which I saved for my first dinner upon my return to Florence.
